background: The centromere is a specialized chromatin domain, present throughout the cell cycle, that acts as a platform on which the transient assembly of the kinetochore occurs during mitosis. All active centromeres are characterized by the presence of long arrays of nucleosomes in which CENPA (MIM 117139) replaces histone H3 (see MIM 601128). CENPM is an additional factor required for centromere assembly (Foltz et al., 2006 [PubMed 16622419]).[supplied by OMIM, Mar 2008] Function: CENPM (Centromere protein M) is a component of the CENPA-NAC (nucleosome associated) complex, a complex that plays a central role in kinetochore protein assembly, mitotic cell cycle progression and chromosome segregation. Subcellular Location: Cytoplasmic and Nuclear. Note: Nuclear in non confluent cells and cytoplasmic in confluent or dividing cells. Localizes in the kinetochore domain of centromeres. Tissue Specificity: Isoform 3 is highly expressed in spleen, and intermediately in heart, prostate and ovary. Isoform 3 is highly expressed in resting CD19 B-cells and B-lineage chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) cells and weakly expressed in activated B-cells. Isoform 1 is selectively expressed in activated CD19 cells and weakly in resting CD19 B-cells.
